Day 23 – Ode to Joy

20 Jul

This was Seldon’s first year in middle school and he joined the band. He wanted to play saxophone, but the band instructor picks the instrument based on what he thinks students are best suited for. Seldon came home from his first band practice with a trumpet. The first time he practiced upstairs in his room, ZuZu sat at the bottom of the stairs and howled. He’s gotten better, and ZuZu is more tolerant.

Last week, I convinced him that he should play something and let me video it for grandma. That’s why he says, “Hi Grandma,” before he starts to play. Of all the songs he’s learned to play this year, I like this one the best. It is called “Ode to Joy” but I always knew it by the first line of the lyrics because it was an old hymn we used to sing at church, Joyful, joyful we adore Thee.

No one in our family is all that musically inclined, so it is fun watching Seldon take an interest in the trumpet. I’m looking forward to the day that I can listen to him playing “Taps” at the cenotaph on Remembrance Day. Hearing that played always fills me with such emotion.

So, without further adieu, here is Seldon playing “Ode to Joy”, this one is for you Grandma:

Great Job Seldon! I remember learning to play that on the clarinet in grade 7. It is my VERY favourite hymn. :0)
